DENTAL DEEP CLEANING & PERIODONTAL DISEASE
For adults, gum problem is one of the most common oral health concerns. The earliest stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, does not cause any pain on your teeth or gums. For many of us, issues like slight redness, minor swelling of the gums, occasional bit of blood when brush our teeth don’t seem so significant. However, these early signs could be a warning that our dentists at Hamlin Dental will take it seriously. When you visit our dental offices, if a routine dental exam reveals signs of gingivitis, our dentist may require a deep periodontal cleaning to fight it before it grows more severe.
Periodontal deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planning, is a thorough dental cleaning of root surfaces to remove plaque and tartar from around teeth and underneath the gum line. This kind of cleaning along with proper daily brushing and flossing, is effective in treating gingivitis (an early stage of gum disease) and helps to prevent the more serious form of gum disease (periodontitis).
Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, our Hamlin Dental professionals will do scaling and root planning in two visits, dividing the mouth in 4 quadrants and doing 2 quadrants on each visit. Typically, upper and lower quadrants on one side are done at your first visit and upper and lower quadrants on the other side at your second visit.
It is very important to take good care of the gums, if left untreated, the pockets in the gums will continue to deepen and the bone that holds the teeth will be destroyed, and eventually causing tooth loss. In the event that your periodontal disease has already progressed into more severe stages of gum disease, then you might require to visit a gum specialist to get more specialized periodontal care and maintenance to control it.
